USA: Return to Orlando

Flag_USABroadcast – 06 December 2016

Six months since lone gunman Omar Mateen walked into Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida killing 49 people and wounding another 53, the Orlando local LGBT community has been changed forever.

Within minutes of word getting out about the shooting, the GLBT Centre of Central Florida located in Orlando became ‘ground zero’ for the community response. We spoke to them here on World Wide Wave at the time – and now we go back to Orlando six months on.

  • How has the LGBT community in Orlando responded since the shooting?
  • What does it mean to a city to have an LGBT Centre, especially in a time of tragedy?
  • What are the secrets of success for creating an LGBT Centre that Melbourne might learn from?

Sharing his experiences since the tragedy plus his ideas to assist the development of Melbourne’s LGBT Centre, we speak with Terry DeCarlo, the Executive Director of the GLBT Centre of Central Florida located in Orlando.

You can listen to our original interview immediately following the incident in June 2016 here.
