VENEZUELA: HIV RESPONSE IN CRISIS

News & Politics, North and South America

Broadcast: August 8, 2017
Extreme and widespread poverty dominates the social and political landscape. The health system has effectively collapsed and cannot provide even the most basic services. HIV treatments are scarce and prevention is virtually non-existent.  Not since the early days of HIV ravishing Africa have we seen such a failed response to this disease. We are talking about modern day Venezuela.
  • What is preventing HIV treatment drugs from getting to those in need?
  • How is the international community responding to this crisis?
  • What terrible psychological toll is this taking on Venezuelans with HIV and the LGBT community?
Providing an insight from behind the barricades in Venezuela, we were joined by Feliciano Reyna from Acción Solidaria (Action for Solidarity – www.accionsolidaria.info) based in Caracas.
