SYRIA: STANDING OUT TO STAND UP FOR GAY RIGHTS

Africa and the Middle East, News & Politics

Being gay in a highly conservative country where same-sex love can land you in gaol is highly risky.  When it is a war-torn country that you need to escape in order to survive, it takes the word “challenge” to a whole new level.  It is in this setting that the first ever Mr Gay Syria competition was held – and captured on film.
  • How did the seeds of the first Mr Gay Syria competition start to grow?
  • What stopped the Mr Gay Syria winner from reaching the Mr Gay World competition?
  • If you are from Syria, why would you risk everything by allowing your story to be told on film to the world?
To peel back the veils on a hidden part of Syria, we were joined by Aysa Toprak, Director of the documentary Mr Gay Syria – another of the fantastic films at this year’s Melbourne Queer Film Festival (www.mqff.com.au).
Broadcast: March 20, 2018
