AUSTRALIA: UNLOCKING A SECRET TOOLKIT TO TACKLE LGBTI RIGHTS

Asia/Pacific, News & Politics

Quite often the images we see of the United Nations is as a place of division and disagreement. Where some countries fight while others try to stop them fighting. But many of the underlying principles forged after World War Two remain – and have been accepted by most countries in the world.  Tonight we discover how one of these covenants can help LGBTI people.

  • What is this International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights?
  • How can these words on a page cause countries to become more sensitive to the needs of their local LGBTI communities?
  • What implications could these covenants have on Australia’s current religious freedom debate?

At the launch of a toolkit to access this UN covenant, we spoke with

  • Former High Court Justice, the Honorable Michael Kirby – Patron of Kaleidoscope Australia Human Rights Foundation
  • Raymond Roca, Kaleidoscope Australia’s President and lead author of the guide (www.kaleidoscopeaustralia.com)
