SOUTH AFRICA: GIVING PRIDE A VOICE

SOUTH AFRICA: GIVING PRIDE A VOICE

South Africa has the most progressive laws for LGBTI people in Africa. But stigma, religion and the slow pace that attitudes change across generations still adds hurdles along life’s journey.  And it’s even more challenging if you are part of South Africa’s indigenous community.  Challenges that our guest has well and truly overcome to become an international singer and actor.

  • After coming out, what caused him to deny his sexuality and go back in the closet?
  • When his life hit rock bottom, how did he turn it around?
  • Why isn’t he comfortable being a role model for queer Africans?

Sharing the highs and lows of being an ‘out’ indigenous South African, international singer and actor, we spoke with Nakhane (www.nakhaneofficial.com), star of the acclaimed film The Wound – and coming to Australia soon for shows including Midsumma Carnival’s Nocturnal at Melbourne Museum (www.midsumma.org.au).
