New Zealand: Crossing The Lines

Crossing The LinesThere are many books written about World War Two. They document the advances and losses. They illustrate the patriotism and bravery – and even sometimes the foolishness and cruelty of war. However there are very few books that detail the life of homosexual people in wartime – and certainly none from New Zealand. Well… that is, until now.

One Kiwi author uncovered the story of three gay female impersonators, part of the New Zealand Army Corps. Their job was to entertain the troops – and they did so in many ways! What started as a casual chat about life in the army for a research project, turned into an 11 year obsession for author and academic Brent Coutts. The result was the book – Crossing The Lines, The Story of Three Homosexual Soldiers in World War II.
