Kenya: U.S. embassy pushes gay rights agenda despite fear of backlash

Kenyan flag“Homosexuality is considered illegal here in Kenya [but] there is a very peaceful co-existence. There was concern if we focused attention on the gay community, Kenya could turn into another Uganda,” says Raymond Stephens, Cultural Affairs Officer for the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi. The embassy held a LGBT-friendly workshop despite fear of backlash. The largest reaction was the speculations of the Kenyan press that the workshop caused U.S. Ambassador Scott Gration’s resignation.
