Philippines: More awareness, but not enough acceptance

Asia/Pacific

Philippines Flag“We are not promiscuous, we are people. People with spirits and souls. We have to keep on making a certain kind of noise…ask people difficult questions,” proclaims Boy Abunda, inspirational talk-show host and senior advisor to LadLad, the LGBT political party of the Philippines. Maica Lagman discusses the biggest task facing LadLad: full acceptance.

“It’s not really “acceptance”, people just tolerate it. When you say acceptance, it has to be full acceptance.  Where you accept people for who they are, it’s not really conditional,” says Lagman.

“There’s really a stigma if you come out as an LGBT here.”

We also hear from DJ Angelyne and Romer of Spirit FM and our in-studio guest Will discusses the gay dialect of the Philippines.
