Papua New Guinea: HIV education paves way for decrimalisation

Asia/Pacific

PNG flagThe Australian-funded Poro Sapot project has “mobilised the gay community to come out and fight,” said “Topsy”, former manager of a branch of the project. “People say the Papua New Guinea has a high prevalence of HIV, but if you see it on a positive note, that means people are coming out and getting tested.”

He also explained that, ten years ago, it was difficult for gay people to come out, but there has been progress. Topsy said that working in tandem with the churches involved creativity:

“The churches would emphasise the “A” abstinence from sex and “B” Be faithful to your partner, and the “C”–using condoms– were the programs that we ran.”
