Australia Day!

Music

Hi Listeners,

Next Sunday (Jan 26) is Australia Day. When Australia Day was first commemorated it had a narrow focus: to recognise the landing of James Cook on our shores. Early History books called it the ‘discovery of Australia’. Fortunately, today, we are much wiser and Australia Day now aims to celebrate our multicultural diversity and is gradually recognising that to the original inhabitants of our country Australia Day is not a day of celebration, but a day of mourning. They call it ‘Invasion Day’. Reconciling and recognising all of our past is now an important part of Australia Day.

To show our own celebration of Australia Day we are, naturally, going to feature all Australian singers. For a twist we are playing mostly singers who have made it big overseas, many of whom still live there. And to pay some homage to our LGBTI community we are featuring two popular and remembered singers: Lana Cantrell and Peter Allen. Hence our theme this week is ‘Home And Away’.
