Cars

Music

Hi Listeners

On Sunday we are presenting songs about Cars and the Driving Experience. For years cars, have been symbolic of wealth, power and status. This is summed up very deftly in Janis Joplin’s classic ‘Mercedes Benz’. For young people a rite of passage is when you get your driver’s licence and your first car!

Many of the songs reveal the masculinity of cars in the fifties, sixties and seventies – the songs are mostly about men and boys and cars. Girls are what you try to entice into your car – presumably to trap them into a potentially sexual experience. Indeed many songs are about this and allude to things happening in the ‘backseat’. I wonder how many of us have had a ‘back seat’ experience?

Included are songs about the driving experience such as Rose Royce’s “Car Wash’ and Little Deuce Coupe’ or hitchhiking in Bobby and Laurie’s ‘Hitch Hiker’. We are also presenting an Album of the week each week. This week it’s Carole King’s iconic album ‘Tapestry’. Another change is we have included a closing instrumental for the programs. It is ‘Southern Rora’ by the Joyboys. (How apt is that?)

We hope you enjoy
