Yesterday Once More

1964

Music

Hello Listeners,

Ahhh 1964! Who could forget? The year when the tsunamai of Beatlemania swept around the world and the Fab Four visited Australia. I only dimly remember the concert at Festival Hall that year – thousands of screaming girls made listening almost impossible. Four dark suited young men strutting on the stage and above all the image of the medicos carrying out stretcher after stretcher of fainting girls. That year for the first time ever the Beatles held the top six positions in AUstralia’s Top 100.

But, interestingly enough 1964 wasn’t all Beatles. Cast a glance over the Playlist below and you will see the Rolling Stones (It’s All Over Now) and Elvis still sticking around (Such A Night). There were also strong female presences in that year – Cilla Black (You’re My World), Petula Clark (Downtown) and Dionne Warwick (Anyone Who Had A Heart).Even Dean Martin had a hit (Everybody Loves Somebody). Australian artists were thin on the ground and it wasn’t until the next few years that bands started to catch up with the Beatles.

Whichever way you look at it was a great year for music. So tune in and enjoy the sounds of 1964.
