Decades
Hi Listeners,
Where were you in 1959? 1969? or 1979? This week we are presenting songs from the end of the decades 1959, 1969 and 1979. In 1959 there were some major singers in their last gasps of popularity such as Johnny Ray (I’ll Never Fall In Love Again) which was his attempted ‘come back’ hit after years off the charts. The song was very successful but Ray’s popularity never reached the dizzy heights of the early fifties when he was an icon commanding crowds as big as The Beatles. Shirley Bassey (Kiss Me Honey Honey Kiss Me) started off an incredibly successful career which saw her become an icon of drag queens. 1969 was a fairly nondescript year. The Beatles were still there with ‘The Ballad of John And Yoko’ which was a brave song to foist on a bemused public.
However, the sheer catchiness of the song and its cheeky lyrics proved to be very popular. In Australia Ross D Wylie’s ‘Star’ had risen and he enjoyed popularity for a time. 1969 saw the instrumental ‘Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet’ by Henry Mancini storm up the charts. The song featured in Franco Zeferelli’s lush and romantic film. In 1979 GLBTI listeners will remember with fondness the Village People and their campy songs such as YMCA and the Boomtown Rats disturbing song based on a murder ‘I Don’t Like Mondays’. During this year the Prisoner series on Australian television was riding high and produced the one-hit for Lynne Hamilton (On The Inside).
So wherever you were and whatever you were doing, hopefully, these songs will bring back memories for you.
