Strange Utterings

Music

Hi Listeners,

This week we are presenting an unusual – even strange – program demonstrating how songs have used different strange words. Sounds? Or maybe the word is ‘utterings’. If I sang ‘Oo ee oo a a walla walla bing bang’ I’m sure many of you will recognize David Seville’s ‘Witch Doctor’. Roy Orbison was one of the first popular singers to employ a series of strange utterings in his song ‘Only The Lonely’ -‘Dum Dum Dum Dum didewah Oh yay yay yay ahh wow wow wow ooah’ is the catchy ‘hook’ to the song. Who can forget the strange beginning to Blue Swede’s ‘Hooked On A Feeling’ – ‘Hooga Hooga Hooga Chucka?’

So this is what we are highlighting on this week’s program. From the distinct backing vocals ‘Sha La La la’ in the Shirelle’s “Baby It’s You’ to the non- meaning titles such as our own Hans Poulsen’s ‘Boom Sha La La’ and Manfred Mann’s ‘Doo Wah Diddy Diddy’ or Barry Mann’s tribute to these sounds in ‘Who Put The Bomp’. Just for fun we’ve included two novelty songs; Rick Dees’ ‘Disco Duck’ replete with duck quacks and Buzz Clifford’s weird (or cute) ‘Baby Sittin’ Boogie’ with unnerving baby sounds. For those who can remember we will also present a rare treat – the highly successful radio show ‘ The Goons’ consisting of Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe and Spike Milligan are here with their big novelty hit of the fifties ‘Ying Tong’.

So for a program of weird and catchy sounds tune in and you will enjoy.
