Hi Listeners,

This week it’s one of those ‘where were you when’ programs. We are going right back to 1957. Let me remind you of what was happening of not0 in Australia in 1957. You only have to look at the leaders of our country (Robert Menzies) and of our state (Henry Bolte) to gauge the nature of politics in 1957. But, there were some significant events in that year, namely:

Jan Utzon wins the prize for his design of the Sydney Opera House
GTV9 officially opens in Melbourne
In Melbourne Tonight with Graham Kennedy begins on May 7

This year also saw the births of Debra Byrne, Jamie Redfern, Gary Sweet, Kevin Rudd and Nick Cave.

Musically, it was a dry year for Australian music echoed in Slim Dusty’s ‘Pub With No Beer’ one of the few Australian highlights. But, when you look at the charts of 1957 you can see an interesting mix of old and new. Some of the biggest stars from the old era of crooners and melodic songs are still there such as Perry Como (Round And Round) and Rosemary Clooney (Hey There) mixed with the brash up and coming rock and roll stars like Chuck Berry (Rock And Roll Music0 and Elvis Presley (Jailhouse Rock). It was a transition year for popular music.
