Aspects Of Love
Hi Listeners
Ahh love! Freud described romantic love as a ‘sickness and craziness, an illusion, a blindness to what the loved person is like.’ There is some truth in Freud’s definition for surely, those of us who’ve been through it, it’s both agony and ecstasy. For me the most disturbing aspect of love is that it makes you so vulnerable. You transfer power to someone else who can manipulate and control your emotions. Yet we gladly submit to it!
Well, songwriters and singers have written and sung extensively about Love for as long as songs have been written. But, this week we are going to delve a little deeper and look at how various songs deal with love and all its aspects. In some songs such as Gene Pitney’s power ballad ‘Half Heaven Half Heartache’, Air Supply’s ‘Love And Other Bruises’ and even Frank Ifield’s ‘Lovesick Blues’ love is presented as a negative, hurtful emotion. For Ben E King in ‘Amor’ and Bob Lind’s poetic ‘Elusive Butterfly’ love is wonderful, even ethereal. In other songs, we see love as uncertain and puzzling (‘Sandie Shaw’s ‘How Can You Tell’), unrequited (Jerry Vale’s ‘You Don’t Know Me’) or even platonic (Lulu’s ‘To Sir With Love’).
Whichever way you view love, it seems it is always there and we often ‘chase the bright elusive butterfly of love’ for better or for worse.
Enjoy and emote
