Singer Actors

Music

Hi Listeners

There have been many actors who have tried singing with varying success and many singers who have tried acting. This week we are presenting singer actors or actor singers. On this week’s program there are two singer/actors who managed to achieve equal prominence in both. Soaring above the pack is Bing Crosby who was the most popular singer/actor of his day. His acting career was long and distinguished whether it was teaming up with Bob Hope in the ‘Road’ movies or achieving critical acclaim in more dramatic roles as in ‘The Country Girl’ also starring Grace Kelly (who features briefly here with Bing on ‘True Love’, a monster hit for them). Equally his singing career was long and distinguished.

Doris Day began as a singer and then switched to acting as well. Already a popular performer her film roles earned her high praise as in the ‘ROM comedies’ with Rock Hudson or ‘Calamity Jane’. Like Bing. she also won praise for her dramatic roles in ‘Midnight Lace’ and Hitchcock’s ‘The Man Who Knew Too Much’. Other actors such as Lorne Greene (Bonanza) only ventured into singing (or rather talking) briefly releasing a Western song (Ringo) or television stars such as David Soul (Don’t Give Up On Us) from ‘Starsky and Hutch’ fame and Australia’s Lionel Long (The Ballad of Cobb And Co) better known for his role in ‘Homicide’. Teen idols such as Frankie Avalon (Swinging On A Star) and Tab Hunter (Apple Blossom Time) combined both acting with singing. Two other huge movie stars, Sophia Loren (Bing Bang Bong) and Tony Perkins (Psycho), both produced hit songs.

If you like our music and you like the movies then this week’s program is perfect for you!
