The Eyes Have It
Hi Listeners
This week’s theme is a simple one – EYES! Of all the parts of the human body the eyes have been written about the most in song lyrics. It is interesting to consider why this may be. Eyes are primarily ‘the organs of vision’ – just another biological organism in out bodies. So why are they written about so much? It is because we attribute the eyes with expressing various emotions and having beauty. Dr Hook’s ‘Sexy Eyes’ exemplifies this well as does Rosemary Clooney’s old favourite ‘Beautiful Brown Eyes’ and Crystal Gayle’s ‘Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue’.
But there is also the sense that the eyes are our primary way of viewing others. Frankie Valli’s ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’, Bobby and Lauries’ ‘Through the Eyes Of Love’ and the Flamingoes ‘I Only Have Eyes For You’ emphasise the importance of the eyes in romance. Bobby Vee’s ‘The Night Has A thousand Eyes’ depicts a more sinister use for the eyes and The Platters beautiful rendition of the Jerome Kern’s classic ‘Smoke Gets In Your Eyes’ is a metaphor for the blindness of love.
So this week we have a wonderful array of songs about eyes which we hope you will enjoy.
