Yesterday Once More

5 May 2015

Sand, Stars, Ships and the Sea

Music

Hi Listeners

This week’s program has a maritime flavour. Combining songs about sand, stars, ships and the sea we hope to create aural and linguistic images of the nautical world. Frankie Ford’s bubbly ‘Sea Cruise’ is followed by Bobby Darin’s great version of the French song ‘La Mer’ (Beyond The Sea) and later Phil Phillips’ hugely popular one hit wonder ‘Sea Of Love’. Then follows a trio of songs about ships such as The Tarriers’ calypso inspired ‘Banana Boat Song’ and Barry Manilow’s poignant ‘Ships’ ending with the surprise hit by Tom Jones of the old Scottish ditty ‘Skye Boat Song’. Finding songs about ‘sand’ was a challenge.

However, we dug deep and came up with Rusty Draper’s lament of the early fifties ‘Shifting Whispering Sands’ and the Shangri-Las ‘Walking In The Sand’. Instrumentals can sometimes fill the brief too as in ‘Sand Storm’ by Johnny And The Hurricanes. A couple of oblique songs: ‘Bright Eyes’ by Art Garfunkel is from the movie ‘Watership Down’ and Tony Bennett’s classic ‘The Shadow Of Your Smile’ is from the movie ‘The Sandpiper’.

We hope you enjoy the nautical journey on ‘Yesterday Once More’ this week.
