Signature Songs

Music

Hi Listeners

This week the team is back together. Mossy has returned from her overseas jaunt and we are ready to present you with another interesting and entertaining program. Many singers are often associated with one major song. This is the song that readily identifies them and accompanies them throughout their careers. They are called signature songs. When we think of Frank Sinatra we think ‘My Way’. On the other hand, there are many famous singers with many hits who don’t have a particular signature song. So in organising this program we have tried to match songs which are identified strongly with the artists.

Most would agree that ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ (Queen),’Good Vibrations’ (Beach Boys) or ‘Eloise’ by Barry Ryan or or own Aussie classic ‘Eagle Rock’ (Daddy Cool) are signature songs. On the second tier we have Olivia Newton-John’s Grammy awarded song ‘I Honestly Love You’ or Bill Wither’s soulful ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ or even the Big Bopper’s ‘Chantilly Lace’.

On the third tier are some songs that we have nominated as ‘signature songs’ but there are arguments against this definition. John Farnham’s ‘Sadie The Cleaning Lady’ is here, but I doubt he would now just want to be identified with this, his first hit. Roy Orbison’s ‘Crying’ has been included, but it could be argued that there are other Orbison songs such as ‘Pretty Woman’ which are just as significant in his career. Finally, The Young Rascal’s big hit ‘Groovin” is included, but perhaps neither the song nor the group is well known today.
