Towns And Villages

Music

HI Listeners

Home towns and special villages that we remember. Or is it the small-minded people who can upset our lives as we live in a fishbowl existence? It’s all here this week as I present songs about Towns And Villages. Starting with Jeannie C Riley’s cutting story of the ‘Harper Valley PTA’ and Mrs Johnson’s revenge and Gene Pitney’s lament about the small mindedness of people in the ‘Town Without Pity’. More romantic visions of small towns can be heard in Paul Anka’s ‘My Home Town’, Patti Page’s eulogy for “Old Cape Cod’ and The Seekers cheery ‘Morningtown Ride’.

The wilful destruction of a small home town caught the imagination of listeners when Verdelle Smith’s ‘Tar And Cement’ became a million seller. Neglected Aussue singer Margaret Roadknight penned an Australian satirical look at ‘Girls In Our Town’ while Simon And Garfunkel, ever thoughtful, sang about growing up in ‘My Little Town’. The Dream Academy scored a huge hit with ‘Life In A Northern Town’ and Andy Williams went all religious and produced a million seller with ‘The Village Of St Bernadette’ while The Browns portrayed the life of Jimmy Brown in ‘The Three Bells’. The program closes with Martin Denny’s exotic instrumental ‘Quiet Village’.
