Toys And Games

Music

Hi Listeners

This week is a bit of a novelty program. The theme is ‘Toys And Games’ and all songs will demonstrate various toys and games relevant to certain times. Just for a different approach the show will top and tail with two old songs about toys – ‘Teddy Bear’s Picnic’ and ‘The Wedding Of The Painted Doll’. There are songs about particular toys such as ‘Marvellous Toy’ sung by Val Doonican and the metaphorical ‘Cuddly Toy’ from the Monkees.

Specific toys are represented from bygone times such as Teresa Brewer’s ‘Hula Hoop Song’ which cashed in on the Hula Hoop craze of the fifties and made her a fortune. Perry Como’s ‘Kewpie Doll’ reminds us of the old fairground attractions we used to love. Teddy Bears (Teddy Bear’s Song by Barbara Fairchild and Elvis’s ‘Teddy Bear’) are perennial popular toys. There are also rag dolls (Rag Doll by The Four Seasons), tin soldiers (One Tin Soldier by Original Caste) and rubber balls ‘(Rubber Ball by Bobby Vee) and even new keys and roller skates (Brand New Key by Melanie).

There were word games too. Shirley Ellis sang and instructed us how to play ‘The Name Game’ while the bubblegum group 1910 Fruitgum Company sang about the old familiar game we’ve all played called ‘Simon Says’.
