Music

Hi Listeners,

Last week we presented solo performers who had been members of groups before embarking on a solo career. This week we are looking at some groups which have spawned or hatched solo performers. For example, American super group The Monkees produced some solo performances by Davy Jones and Mike Nesmith. (A Little Bit Me A Little Bit You). Last week we listened to Aussie Ronnie Burns. This week you will hear his group The Flies with one of their songs ‘Doin’ The Mod’. Cream produced Eric Clapton (White Room) and the Supremes (The Haappening) helped launch the solo career of superstar, Diana Ross.

Both Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel branched out into solo careers after their very successful stint as a duo (Sounds Of Silence) while our own Daryl Braithwaite went solo after Sherbet broke up (Howzat). Russell Morris had a brief career as part of the group Somebody’s Image (Hush) and became a bigger star as a solo performer. When Ben.E.King left the Drifters, the group survived (Some Kind Of Wonderful) with multiple personnel changes. Finally, an interesting evolution occurred with Buddy Holly. Starting as the lead singer of The Crickets (Maybe Baby) the group morphed into Buddy Holly And The Crickets and then Buddy Holly, solo performer.
