Earth Air Fire And Water

Music

Hi Listeners

Back in Ancient Greek times philosophers such as Aristotle postulated that the known world and the stars could be reduced to four basic essential elements:Earth, Air, Fire And Water. These also formed the basis for Hinduism and Buddhism. So to reflect that ancient belief this week we are presenting songs with the four elements of Earth, Air, Fire And Water (or their synonyms) in their titles. Earth can be construed as our planet or the solid matter comprising the land. Three songs reflect this: Nat King Cole’s version of ‘Around The World’, the Penguins early fifties hit ‘Earth Angel’ and our own Delltones with one of their biggest hits ‘Get A Little Dirt On Your Hands’.

Air songs are singer-songwriter Don Mclean’s ‘Castles In The Air’ and that great one hit wonder from Thunderclap Newman ‘Something In The Air’. Water songs are prominent in the program too. From the Kinks with their wonderful song ‘Waterloo Sunset’ to Frankie Laine’s desert lament about the essential need for water in ‘Cool Water’. Included are two Aussie singers – John Farnham with a synonym for water in ‘Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head’ and Queenslander Tony Worsley’s big Hit ‘Velvet Waters’.

Fire is represented by the disco song ‘Disco Inferno by the Trammps, Johnny Cash’s big hit “Ring Of Fire’ and the maniacal performance of ‘Fire’ from The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown.
