Yesterday Once More

31 May 2016

Radiothon 2016

Music

Hi Listeners,

Well it’s arrived: the biggest week of the year for JOY 94.9. This coming week is Radiothon 2016 where we hope to enlist many JOY listeners as renewed or new members of our great radio station. This week we are ‘out, loud and proud’ as we hope to convince listeners of ‘Yesterday Once More’ to become JOY members. Without our memberships JOY wouldn’t be financially viable, so to do your bit join up and put yourself in the running to win some great prizes.

To celebrate ‘out, loud and proud’ we are presenting a program of GLBTI singers across the fifties, sixties and seventies. As you go back in time visible GLBTI performers are hard to find. However, information in the public domain has allowed us to acknowledge early singers like Johnny Ray (Yes Tonight Josephine) and Johnny Mathis (Wonderful Wonderful). Other artists identifying as gay or bisexual include Dusty Springfield (Windmills Of Your Mind), Lesley Gore (She’s A Fool), Janis Ian (Fly Too High), Laura Nyro (Save The Country) and Lana Cantrell (Gentle On My Mind).

More ‘out, loud and proud’ singers include Elton John (Don’t Go Breaking My Heart), Boy George from Culture Club (Do You really Want To Hurt Me?) two singers from The Village People (You Can’t Stop The Music) and, of course, flamboyant Freddie Mercury and Queen (Crazy Little Thing Called Love). We celebrate too the untimely and tragic death of Peter Allen, one of finest GLBTI performers.
