Compounds

Hi Listeners,

This week’s program is about word combinations or compounds. For the purposes of the program a compound is a song title composing of two or more elements. It’s a definition better explained by examples. Starting off with a couple of favourite Aussie singers, Billy Thorpe (Sick And Tired) and Renee Geyer (Stares And Whispers) there will be performances from the great Joan Baez, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder and Bill Haley. Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder combined their talents to sing ‘Ebony And Ivory’, a fairly obvious plea for racial harmony. Jackie De Shannon does a creditable job on the Searcher’s big hit ‘Needles And Pins’ while the Newbeats playfully sing about a favourite combination of ‘Bread And Butter’. Another, more playful, plea for harmony is sung by the Irish Rovers with ‘The Orange And The Green’ neatly summing up their country’s religious difficulties.

Joan Baez, one of the great voices of the sixties, produced a great album which featured the song written by her ‘Diamonds And Rust’ depicting her previous relationship with Bob Dylan. An Aussie classic is Kevin Johnson’s stirring depiction of his musical life in ‘Rock N Roll (I Gave You All The Best Years Of My Life)’ while a rare but interesting cover comes from Aussie group Ray Hoff And The Hoffbeats (Tossin’ And Turnin’). Iconic rocker. Bill Haley invites us to ‘Shake Rattle And Roll’ and Jewel Akens with his one hit wonder, ‘The Birds And The Bees’ taps into the traditional view of procreation. Finally, LQBTI songstress, Lesley Gore, sums up the whole combination theme with her sunny song ‘Sunshine Lollipops And Rainbows’.
