Dreaming

Hi Listeners,

This week’s theme is Dreaming. Many songs use the state of dreaming as a form of lovesickness. A typical dreaming love song is Aussie Bryan Davies’ version of ‘Dream Girl’. Likewise, Air Supply’s power ballad ‘Sweet Dreams’ evokes romantic thoughts. The act of dreaming is summed up too in Johnny Burnette’s popular sixties song ‘Dreamin’.’

Dreaming as a process of thought is also apparent in songs like the wonderful voice of Joan Baez in ‘I Never Dreamed You’d Leave In Summer’ written by Stevie Wonder. ABBA’s ‘I Have A Dream’ evokes the notion of dreaming as wishing. A rare song is Aussie Peter Doyle’s ‘Plastic Dreams And Toy Balloons’ or the old fifties hit ‘Sh Boom – Life Could Be A Dream’ by the Crewcuts. Supertramp’s catchy ‘Dreamer’ taps into the notion of unreality.

Two songs about dreams are Roy Orbison’s ‘Leah’ which tells the story of a nightmare experienced by the singer while Eric Burdon’s ironic fantasy ‘Spill the Wine’ creates a mystical dream where the singer sees himself as the ‘star of a Hollywood movie’ and finds it remarkable that he ‘a long haired leaping gnome should be the star of a Hollywood movie’.
