Kisses
Hi Listeners,
Osculation….pashing…smooching. What is it about the act of kissing? Obviously there are different types of kissing – betwwen a parent and a child or among friends. But, overwhelmingly in the pop music world it’s associated with romance. Not just as a prelude to something deeper but sometimes as an ending too.
Kissing as the start of something is expressed in several songs this week. Louis Armstrong sums it up in the old standard ‘A Kiss To Build A Dream On’ while the Everly Brothers ‘Til I Kissed You’ captures the thrill of that first kiss. Likewise the Crystal’s big hit ‘Then He Kissed Me’ pinpoints the kiss as the very moment when romance begins. Jimmie Rodger’s playful take on this in ‘Kisses Sweeter Than Wine’ blames the kiss for everything that follows -having babies and becoming grandparents!
Aussie group Sty;us simply indulges in ‘Kissin’ while Brian Hyland scored hugely with the sweet ‘Sealed With A Kiss’. Hall And Oates play around with the idea in ‘Kiss Is On My List’and Mel Carter’s big ballad ‘Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me’ evokes the whole romantic context. But, a kiss can also mark the end. Petula Clark’s ‘Kiss Me Goodbye’, the Manhattan’s ‘Kiss And Say Goodbye’ and Crash Craddock’s hit from the musical ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ (One Last Kiss) evoke the kiss as a closure.
