Cheatin’ Hearts

Music

Hi Listeners,

Sometimes songwriters and singers love to indulge in dramatic and emotion-filled themes. The figure of the cheating partner and the bereaved victim are a rich material for many pop songs. This proliferation is summed up in B J Thomas’s clever, tongue in cheek, ‘Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song’ while interesting singer, Bill Withers, pinpoints the age old question of the suspicious lover in ‘Who Is He And What Is He To You’.

Catching a wayward partner in the act provides rich drama in Nancy Wilson’s sublime and delicious ‘Guess Who I Saw Today’ while The Shirelles ‘Baby It’s You’ emphasises the moral outrage through the repetition of ‘cheat, cheat’. The general question of the role of temptation is posed by Aussie group’s the Virgil Brothers’ ‘Temptation’s Bout To Get Me’. Little River Band’s ‘The Other Guy’ is a rare song because it features the short lived career of John Farnham as lead singer of the group.

Eternal triangles are commonplace in pop song themes. Indeed, Mary McGovern’s poignant ‘Torn Between Two Lovers’ is a justification for the delicate balance of handling a threesome. Similarly, Olivia Newton-John’s huge hit ‘I Honestly Love You’ expresses the pain of two people in love but separated by another relationship. Cheaters themselves (male or female) can be the subject of pop song with both Bob Kuman (The Cheater) and Rob E G’s instrumental version of the classic cheater ‘Jezebel’.
