Guys And Dolls 1

Music

Hi Listeners,

This week we begin a trilogy of programs presenting the most common theme in pop music – names. We’ve selected the binary term ‘Guys And Dolls’ as it fits the era of music we will be featuring. Just to exemplify that ‘This Guy’s In Love With You’, Herb Alpert’s only vocal smash hit, neatly reflects our theme . It is apparent that generally songs with male titles are sung by females and songs with female titles are sung by males. Petula Clark’s big hit ‘Romeo’ and John Rowles’ ‘Cheryl Moana Maree’ are typical in their depiction of adoration for the person in the song. Dionne Warwick’s version of ‘Alfie’ from the motion picture of the same name and The Beach Boys ‘Help Me Rhonda’ are slightly different takes on the theme.

Dion poignantly sings his big hit, a tribute to famous people assassinated in the USA, ‘Abraham Martin And John’ while ABBA’s ‘Fernando’ depicts the story of a loved one in war time. A more satirical offering is Aussie super group, Sherbet’s ‘Magazine Madonna’. Finally, I’ll be dedicating three songs to three of my favourite people at Joy – ‘Anastasia’, ‘Julia’ and ‘Living Next Door To Alice’.
