Heart
Hi Listeners,
It’s a fallacy that the heart is the organ for feeling love and emotional pain. It all happens in the brain, apparently. But, the heart is entrenched as that human part where we feel our deepest and strongest emotions. So really it’s a metaphor. But, a very rich metaphor for songwriters and singers.
This week we present some oldies and some more modern versions of ‘Heart’. We give our heart to someone we love in the fifties’ song, (If I Give My Heart To You by Doris Day). Our loved ones are referred to as ‘Sweetheart’ by wonderful singer, Peggy Lee. The heart can also feel loneliness: Frank Sinatra’s soulful rendition of Tchaikovsky’s Pathetique symphony ‘None But The Lonely Heart’ and Cilla Black’s English version of ‘Anyone Who Had A Heart’ show the pain of heartache. In the eighties, both Bonnie Tyler ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’ and Dionne Warwick’s ‘Heartbreaker’ reflect the pain of a broken heart.
Sarah Vaughan’s popular fifties’ song ‘Broken Hearted Melody’ and Al Martino’s big ballad ‘Here In My Heart’ depict the agony of a broken heart. This was echoed later by the Bee Gees (How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?). Aussie singer, Colin Cook, sings one of his big hits ‘Heart’ while Eddie Fisher sings a song of the same name (Heart) but with a different meaning altogether for the word ‘heart’.
