5th Anniversary

Hi Listeners,

Well here we are – celebrating our fifth anniversary at Joy 94.9. In 2012, while looking at the Joy annual report I noted an absence of music from the fifties, sixties and seventies. It seemed to me that there was a demographic out there we weren’t reaching. Like me, many older LGBTIQ people were avid listeners to the radio in the fifties and sixties when we were teenagers. Many of the great songs from those eras hold precious memories and experiences for us. So Mossy and I decided to apply for a program which featured music from the fifties to the seventies. To our delight it has captured listeners from the demographic we aimed at. But, to our surprise, we also have younger listeners who like the music – often passed on by their parents. We wish to thank you, our listeners, for your support over those five years, for your encouraging comments and to our fellow presenters at Joy who also appreciate our music.

We have scoured the Internet and our own memories to find songs with a ‘5’ theme this week. Some of them are well known favourites such as Aussie group Ol’ 55’s ‘Looking For An Echo’ or the driving We Five’s ‘You Were On My Mind’ or the Dave Clark Five’s ‘Bits And Pieces’. Songs with ‘5’ in the title are not common, but we managed to find Dolly Parton’s ‘9 to 5’ and Dave Brubeck’s surprise instrumental jazz hit ‘Take Five’. Three other instrumental hits are Walter Murphy’s ‘ A Fifth Of Beethoven’ and the popular group, The Ventures, with the theme from the tv series ‘Hawaii Five-O’ together with Aussie classic ’55 Days At Peking’. Less well known are ‘Five Short Minutes To Live’ (Johnny Cash), ‘Five To One’ (The Doors) and ‘Five Years’ (David Bowie).
