Stay And Go

Music

Hi Listeners

This week’s theme is seemingly straightforward – songs with ‘Stay’ or ‘Go’ in the title. However, delving into this theme a pattern emerges – songs with ‘Stay’ in the title are mostly about security and feeling comfortable with the status quo whereas songs with ‘Go’ in the title are more stressful and agitated.

Marianne Faithful’s ‘Come Stay With Me’, Dusty Springfield’s ‘Stay Awhile’ and even the Steve Lawrence/Eydie Gorme smash hit ‘I Just Want To Stay Here And Love You’ depict a desire to remain and be with the one you care about. This sentiment is echoed in Maurice Williams And The Zodiacs ‘Stay’ (Just A Little Bit Longer’ and The Ames brothers’ ballad ‘Stay’. The only song to deviate from this idea of ‘staying’ is the Bee Gees huge hit from ‘Saturday Night Fever’ – ‘Stayin’ Alive’.

‘Go’ or ‘Going’ indicates a situation where a relationship has fractured and is on the verge of breaking up. From the ‘Rumours’ album, Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Go Your Own Way’ could be a reflection of what was happening to the personnel in the band at the time. Emotional songstress Teresa Brewer made an emotional plea in ‘Let Me Go Lover’ which is echoed by Marcia Hines in ‘You Gotta Let Me Go’. A different connotation of ‘go’ is ‘Goin’ Out Of My Head’ by Aussie singer, Lynne Randell and by Dragon’s ‘Don’t Go Out In The Rain’.
