Girt By Sea

Girt By Sea

In 1984 Australia voted ‘Advance Australia Fair’ to be our national anthem. This year (2021) some changes were made to the lyrics to better reflect our times and to include First Australians. In particular the opening line is now ‘Australians all let us rejoice/For we are one and free’. However, the line ‘Our home is girt by sea’ remains as an anachronism because of the presence of the archaic word ‘girt’. Today’s program once again highlights some unique Aussie talent. The opening song is our own acclaimed punk band The Saints (I’m Stranded).

Other songs feature well known singers Olivia Newton-John (Banks Of The Ohio), Helen Reddy (Delta Dawn) and the Masters Apprentices with their classic ‘Because I Love You’. Included too are Cold Chisel (Standing on the Outside) and Richard Clapton (Girls On The Avenue). An oddity is the inclusion of American singer Jimmie Rodgers’ version of our own ‘Waltzing Matilda’.
