In the fifties, sixties and into the seventies INSTRUMENTALS took their place in charts all around the world. Now they have faded into oblivion. Today’s program highlights some of the great instrumentals of the past. Starting with the haunting Harlem Nocturne from The Viscounts we contrast it with the jaunty tune from the film ‘Hatari’ – the Baby Elephant Walk by Henry Mancini. Other orchestra leaders who gladly produced pop hits were the Percy Faith Orchestra (Delicado), Les Baxter Orchestra (April In Portugal) and Mitch Miller orchestra (March from The River Kwai/Colonel Bogey). An unusual offering comes from our own great band Midnight Oil (Wedding Cake Island) . Another popular band was the Melbourne based The Thunderbirds with their rock n roll cover Wild Weekend.
