Similes and Metaphors both compare two things. Similes generally employ the words ‘like’ or ‘as’ (e.g ‘You are like a rolling stone’) whereas Metaphors are more emphatic – they state a definite relationship (e.g ‘I Am A Rock’). Songwriters like poets lyrically seek to improve the text of songs by using Similes and Metaphors in song titles. ‘Cuddly Toy’ by The Monkees, ‘Paper Tiger’ by Sue Thompson and ‘Love Is A Golden Ring’ by Frankie Laine are all metaphors. ‘Walk Like An Egyptian’ by the Bangles, ‘Just Like Romeo And Juliet’ by Mental As Anything and ‘Like A Tiger’ by Fabian are examples of Similes.
