LET’S REMEMBER this week showcases the wonderful songs of English performer Petula Clark (CBE) and instrumentals from the master guitarist American Duane Eddy.
Petula’s long career started during World War II as a child entertainer on the BBC. Her first number one hit was in 1954 with the 1960s giving her over 15 consecutive top 40 charters and international hits including those sung in five European languages. Over the decades she hosted her own TV shows, won 2 Grammys, performed on stage and in films and sold around 70 million records.
Duane, one of the most influential guitarists of the time and renowned for his unique twangy sound was most successful during the 1950s and early 60s. He had numerous top 10 international hits and as his career progressed, he became more popular in the UK than in the US. In 1960 he was voted the UK’s Number One World Musical Personality ousting Elvis Presley. Duane’s biggest hit ‘Because They’re Young’ featured in the film of the same name in which he made a cameo appearance. He went on to sell 12 million records, acted in several Westerns and in 1986 received a Grammy for his remake of ‘Peter Gunn’.
