Covers & Originals

This week’s program is a bit different. We are presenting songs in pairs. In other words the same song sung twice – the original version and a cover. Personally Rob prefers the original but in this program he relents. Greatly acclaimed is Aussie band The Zoot‘s hard rock version of Eleanor Rigby, But the original version by the Beatles is also a classic and one of The Beatle’s most popular songs. Another Aussie, Doug Parkinson does a great job with another Beatles’ song Dear Prudence which some say surpasses the original. Tempo is often the major difference between covers and originals. Jim Capaldi‘s Love Hurts is given a big sound treatment from rock band Nazareth. Bette Midler similarly slows down the rock song Do You Want To Dance (originally sung by Bobby Freeman) into a sexy, sensual torch song. The Archies‘ version of their big hit Sugar Sugar was given a reggae treatment from Bob Marley.
