Shades Of Blue

Music

Hi Listeners,

There have been countless songs written about colours. But probably the most prolific ‘colour’ songs have been about the colour blue. Why is this? Maybe because blue is the colour around us – in the sky, in the sea. It is regarded as a ‘cool colour’ opposed to the ‘hot’ colours like ‘red’ and ‘orange’. The other probable reason is that blue has different meanings apart from being a colour. Mainly in the USA ‘blue’ is a common expression for ‘sadness’ or even ‘depression’. Interestingly, it’s not a meaning we have adopted in Australia. But, since many pop songs are concerned with loss and sadness the colour is a fitting metaphor for these.

So, we will present different aspects of blue. There is the colour represented in Roy Orbison’s ‘Blue Angel’, Linda Ronstadt’s ‘Blue Bayou’ and Elvis Presley’s ‘Blue Hawaii’. There is sadness represented in Neil Diamond’s ‘Song Sung Blue’, Conway Twitty’s ‘Lonely Blue Boy’ and Don Gibson’s ‘Blue Blue Day’. And then there is the Australian meaning of blue presented in John Williamson’s classic song “True Blue’.

So join us as we wallow in all shades of blue.
