Sayings
Hi Listeners
This week we are getting into the verbal jungle of expressions or sayings. The strict definitions of idioms, axioms, adages, proverbs and aphorisms are complicated and specialised. So, to avoid that, we are just calling the theme ‘sayings’. Many songs use sayings as titles. Perhaps of most importance to the GLBTI community is the adopted anthem ‘We Are Family’ by Sister Sledge. Some songs use the saying as cautionary advice such as ‘Let It Be’ (Beatles) or promote a way of looking at the world (‘Always Look On The Bright Side’ by the Monty Python Crew) or ‘That’s Life’ by Shirley Bassey.
Some songs express truths (axioms) as in ‘Silence Is Golden’ (Tremeloes) or ‘Fools Rush In’ (Brook Benton) or ‘We May Never Pass This Way Again’ (Seals And Croft). Writers such as Bob Dylan used expressions to great effect as in ‘Blowin’ In The Wind’ performed by folk group, Peter Paul And Mary. Yet other songs use the saying as the focus or theme of the song such as ‘Easier Said Than Done’ (Essex) and ‘Point Of No Return’ (Gene McDaniels) or repeat a saying ‘Over And Over’ by Bobby Day. One Australian song (Needle In A Haystack) by the Twilights uses the idiom to compare it with trying to find the right girl.
