Solos
Hi Listeners
One of the interesting phenomena that takes place with pop groups is that quite often members of the group branch out as solo performers in order to pursue their own careers. Today, the most outstanding example of that would be Beyonce who since leaving Destiny’s Child has become a superstar. Sometimes the venture succeeds extremely well such as with the Beatles members, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison (My Sweet Lord). Another singer to leave his group (The Faces) and carve out an international career was Rod Stewart (I Don’t Have To Talk About It). In Australia, Russell Morris left his group (Hush) and became a star solo performer (Sweet Sweet Love).
The Supremes, probably the hottest girlie group of the sixties, spawned Diana Ross who became a superstar (Ain’t No Mountain High Enough) and Mary Wells (My Guy) whose career was brief. Other singers to shine briefly as solo performers were Lindsey Buckingham, ex Fleetwood Mac (Trouble) and Mama Cass,ex Mamas And Papas (Dream A Little Dream Of Me) and Frankie Valli from the Four Seasons who had several hits (Grease). Finally, two singers who belonged to more than one group were Eric Clapton (I Shot The Sheriff) and our own Lobby Loyde (Daily Planet) who was an influential member of the Purple Hearts and Wild Cherries.
