Guys And Dolls 2
Hi Listeners,
Welcome to the second of our trilogy of programs with the theme ‘Guys And Dolls’. This week begins with an interpretation of the old standard ‘(Won’t You Come Home) Bill Bailey’ by Afro American singer, Della Reese, with her deep, somewhat harsh voice. Following this is the biggest hit by the trio, The Kingston Trio, ‘Tom Dooley’. This song caught the imagination of the listening public with its catchy chorus and sad narrative. ‘Arthur’s Theme’ from the movie starring Dudley Moore was Christopher Cross’s biggest hit. I will have an emotional reaction to ‘Mandy’ by Barry Manilow as it evokes strong memories of a dear friend who passed away.
Four Aussie singers are featured this week. Doug Parkinson’s knockout version of the Beatles’ ‘Dear Prudence’ and Harry Vander and George Young’s foray into vocal territory with their group Flash And The Pan (Hey St Peter). Perennial favourites The Seekers sing ‘Georgy Girl’ from the film of the same name while Melbourne star, Normie Rowe, pops up with ‘Penelope’. Four brief songs round out the program. Jimmie Rodger’s stirring rendition of ‘Wreck Of The John B’ and two bubblegum offerings, ‘Simon Says’ by the 1910 Fruitgum Company and ‘Tracy’ by the Cufflinks are followed by a catchy song from Billy Williams, released in the 50s but sung in a 1930’s style – ‘Nola’.
