Preview: Trees
Hi Listeners
This week’s program is all about ‘Trees’. It starts brightly with Dawn’s old American civil war song ‘Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree’ which was very, very popular in the sixties. A rare classic from Jo Stafford was her last hit ‘Wind In The Willow’. Seventies’ group ‘Rush’ perform a rock song (The Trees) about a quarrel in the forest between the oaks and the maples which undoubtedly contains a hidden meaning. The song from the film ‘The Great Race’ called ‘The Sweetheart Tree’ was supposedly performed by Natalie Wood. But, because Natalie couldn’t sing the voice is actually an unknown called Jackie Ward. Marty Robbins pops up with the cheery ‘Sittin’ in A Tree House’ and our own Seekers do a Peter Paul And Mary impersonation of ‘Lemon Tree’.
Diana Ross sings the classy ‘Theme from ‘Mahogany” while musical comedy favourites from the forties and fifties, Jan Peerce and Jane Powell, sing the old standard ‘I Talk To The Trees’. Notorious LGBTIQ teenage film heartthrob, Tab Hunter, tried his voice on a couple of songs including ‘Apple Blossom Time’. Latin American orchestra leader, Perez Prado, scored a big hit in the fifties with ‘Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White’. Dorsey Burnette, older brother of Johnny, sings the quasi-religious ‘Tall Oak Tree’ and Natalie Cole demonstrates her fine vocals in the classic ‘Autumn Leaves’.
