Wordless

Today’s program is all about Instrumental hits. The golden decade for instrumental hits was the sixties. Orchestras, groups, individual instrument players such as piano players, saxophonists, drummers and guitarists all produced top charting tunes. In 1962 ‘Telstar’ by English group The Tornadoes was released on the occasion of the launching of the first orbiting satellite. It sold over 5 million copies. Themes from films and television shows were also popular. Percy Faith’s ‘Theme from ‘A Summer Place‘ was the Number 1 selling instrumental of all time. Henry Manicini’s ‘Love Theme from Romeo And Juliet’ – a beautiful song- was another No 1 hit as was the atmospheric theme from television series ‘Mickey Spillane’ – ‘Harlem Nocturne’ by American group The Viscounts.
