The majority of Australians have an immigration background. There are not many of us who do not have family histories that as one time involved immigration to Australia.
As we have seen, there are some benefits from living in Australia, our geographic isolation has had some benefits, our resource rich mining sector has buffered us from the GFC. SO it’s good to be here.
Australia has always been seen as a desirable country for relocation. Europeans, in the 1950-60’s Asian and Vietnamese in 1970-90’s and now people from Africa, and the middle east,
What sort of Australia do we live in with all of these cultures? Are we racist? Are we accepting of diverse cultures, so we exclude some cultures and discriminate?
Homosexual have always had a bit of a hard time with all forms of government red tape including immigration, we’ll see how this is now with Geoff Fitzpatrick (GLITF Convenor) and Bette Hatfield (Chairperson), from The gay and Lesbian Immigration Task Force
We’ll also discuss some of the other issues about immigration, and who the government regards as suitable and not suitable.
