WHAT WE HAVE SEEN LATELY ?

SHOW : A CLOCKWORK ORANGE : We decided to see this on the spur of the moment and are we glad we did. The play follows a particularly nasty young lad who loves nothing more than beating up helpless victims. He gets caught, sent to prison where he agrees to  undergo a special course to rid him of his aggressive tendencies. He is then released from prison and all his sins come back to haunt him. Payback is a bitch, but it makes for a great play. Not for everyone, but for those who don’t mind watching 10 fit young men singing and dancing their way through this black piece of art, I’m sure you’ll get the benefits.

FILM : FIRST POSITION : What a lovely film, watching 2000 ballet dancers from 9-19 competing for prizes, scholarships and employment with the top ballet companies. The film follows 6 dancers, 3 male and three female as they show their training routines and we follow  them from semi-finals to finals. The film moves at a cracking pace but the dancers are the stars. The things these kids go through is way beyond my pain level. Just brilliant.

 GERMAN FILM FESTIVAL

1            FILM : SHORES OF HOPE : Rather chilling film about two lad in the old GDR who want to be sailors and sail the world. Unfortunately the secret police (the Stasi) target them for potential informants. One accepts the offer and makes his way up the ranks whilst messing up the life of his friend who decided not to become and informant and landed up in jail. The paths of the two cross and their respective lives take a downward spiral. It just shows how they managed to keep everyone in check behind the iron curtain. A bit depressing but a good production.

2            FILM : TRANSPAPA : This was a wonderful movie about a troubled teenaged girl who finally finds out why she hasn’t seen her father since he left many years previously. He was now called Sophia and he was a transsexual. Naturally, she wants to meet him, so she calls him and they spend some time together. However it is not an easy process for her, getting used to her new “mother”. But the film is sensitively handled and by the end the relationship becomes quite touching. Brilliant. Go see it.

3            FILM : LOST IN SIBERIA : This is a quirky comedy about a German clothing executive who goes to a far flung branch of the company in Siberia to instruct the staff on the new inventory system. They are not too impressed as they have their own way of doing things. There are lots of funny situations, but the main plot lines concern a mysterious throat singer that the German executive develops a crush on when he see her performing in a local fun fair. He employs a local interpreter to help with the search for her when she leaves town. Interestingly the interpreter tuns out to be gay and living with an abusive homophobic father. The executive develops a moving relationship with the interpreter as they hunt for this exotic performer. One of those feel good movies, and highly recommended.
