So where did 2013 go? Who knows, who cares? On with the show we say. No looking back. Welcome to our first A Touch Of Pink for 2014.We have a full night of tracks including newies from Chvrches, Dario G ft Dame Shirley Bassey, Morgan Page, Ed Sheeran (from The Hobbit), Miley Cyrus, Duke Dumont and The Wombats.
We are also giving Melissa Etheridge’s new single, “Uprising of love” another play. We think that the campaign that it is promoting, to give support our GLBT brothers and sisters in Russia, is important, and it sounds like they need all the support that they can get. You can get more information at her web page melissatheridge.com. Please check it out.
We also have a hilarious, and very relevant comedy track from Matt Consola and James Torres featuring Pollo Del Mar n LFB called “White Lady Problems”.
Single Of The Week is “If only tonight” by Assia Ahatt, partly because it’s a good high energy track, but also because she is from the Ukraine, and has managed to get an amazing video together while all those demonstrations and things are going on.
Here follows tonight’s playlist. Tune in to us this Saturday on JOY 94.9 from 7pm for 26 tracks in 2 hours (yes, we know!). Your hosts are Dennis and Dick.

What Have We Seen ThIs Week ?
Movie : Anchorman 2 : The Will Ferrell sequel about a loser newscaster who gets in on a fledgling 24 hour news channel and recuses his career. Very politically incorrect, but very funny if you like his type of humour, and a breathtaking bunch of cameos during the finale battle.
Movie : Filomina : Starring Judi Dench as a Irish woman trying to find what happened to the baby that was taken from her 50 years ago by the nuns at a home for fallen women, and Steve Coogan as the journalist who helps her uncover the story. This was, for me, a perfect film. It balanced the heartbreak with humour. Top Marks. The gay sub-plot was a pleasant surprise.
Movie : The Hobbit 2 : Let me say at the outset that I loved the Lord Of The Rings Series. But The Hobbit 1 stretched the plot very thinly, and The Hobbit 2 takes nearly 3 hours to stretch it even thinner. Then it finishes just as a big battle was about to begin. Cue The Hobbit 3 which I will not be going to see.
Movie : Inside Llewyn Davis : This reminded me of the film A Mighty Wind, from director Christopher Guest. It had the feel of a mockumentary, about the folk music scene in New York in the 60’s. It was about a loser folk singer, very talented but ahead of his time, and under-appreciated. He just couldn’t get a break. Beautifully filmed, and acted. Worth considering.
Shows Dick saw on his 2013 European Tour :
Musical : The Bodyguard The Musical : Brilliant production of the Whitney/Costner film, starring British soul singer Beverley Knight, who was perfect in the Whitney role. Her singing was a-maz-ing!!! And we all love a disfunctional love story.
Musical : Once The Musical : Wonderful adaptation of the film, set in Dublin, about an Irish loser busker who meets an immigrant Czek lady, who helps him in his singing career. Set in a bar frequented by musicians, it features lots of upbeat Irish music, as they spontaneously burst into song. This is to be an MTC production this year, so if you’re interested in seeing it, keep your eyes and ears open.
Musical : From Here To Eternity The Musical : Yes, another musical based on a film, and the film was the one made in 1951 with Deborah Kerr, Burt Lancaster etc. It was set in Hawaii during WW2, about an army troupe, where one soldier falls in love with a prostitute, and an officer falls in love with a Captains wife. Lots of drama, lots of exciting musical numbers, lots of soldiers running around in singlets, and an excellent score.
Musical : The Book Of Mormon : The musical written by the South Park guys, it was a very funny story about a group of young Mormons doing their ministry in a poor African country, where 80% of the population have AIDS. As expected, the Mormon lads had a hard time convincing the locals of the relevance of their religion to their sad lives. Alternately hysterically funny, then gritty and quite confronting. Yes, it really is that good.
Play : The Duck House : Very entertaining play starring Ben Miller, based around the UK MP’s rorting of the living away allowance to pay for extravagant additions to their homes. Very much in the British farce style, where a politician gets caught with a dominatix/acupuncturist (played by Diana Vickers … yes, the pop singer) wearing a baby’s nappy.
Play : Stranger On A Train : Another play based on a film, the Alfred Hitchcock classic, where two strangers meet and devise the perfect murder, where each agrees to murder the others spouse. Lots of twists and turns and a dramatic finale, where the stage turns into a wall of fire.
Play : Barking In Essex : Extremely un-p.c. show starring Sheila Hancock and Lee Evans. It concerns the London underworld, a brother is returning home after an extended stay in prison, and his mother and wife have been accessing the stolen money to fund their rich life-style. Another very amusing play in the British tradition of farce, but be warned that it uses the c-word extensively. Don’t take your mother, as I did.
Play : Jeeves & Wooster : More wonderful British tom-foolery, this was a stunning adaptation of the play featuring characters played by Matthew Macfadyen and Stephen Mangan, who will be familiar to any UKTV viewers. Highly entertaining, and perfect comedy timing.
Musical : Elisabeth (German, with English surtitles) : Based on the life of Sissi, the misunderstood Empress of Austria, who lived loved in the mid to late 1800’s. A very lavish and dramatic production, and although it was premiered 10 years ago, I have only now been able to see it as it is now performed with English surtitles. So if you are in Vienna any time soon …
