Been There Done That

11 Nov 2015

11/11, W.Carlos, M.Curie, Whaling, Whitlam, N.Kelly, Teddy Bear

Gay, History, Lesbian, Music, Science, transgender, War

This week’s show we discuss Armistice Day (11th November) and remember all those who have been involved in Australia’s wars, those who returned as well as those who lost their lives, limbs and sanity, and how the nature of war has changed over the years.
In recognising transgendered Wendy Carlos [born Walter Carlos], we learn of her pioneering role in the development of electronic modern music, leading us to present-day keyboard synthesisers with full instrument sampling.
We remember Nobel prize winning Polish scientist Marie Curie (b: 7/11/1867) who made a huge impact on how we live today.
We also remember some pioneers in the GLBTIQ communities whose anniversaries fall at this time, as well as local events like the advent of whaling in Australia, the sacking of PM Gough Whitlam, bushranger Ned Kelly’s hanging in the Old Melbourne Goal, how Teddy Bears got their name, and some trivia and mirth…
