We chat about the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras, JOY’s fantastic outside broadcast (in association with our partners SBS), and the diversity of the groups marching.

Having birthday anniversaries around this time are Liza Minnelli – stage & screen actress, singer, daughter of Judy Garland, one-time wife of Peter Allen etc; and Matt (Little Britain) Lucas –who challenged ‘political-correctness’ with his representations of gayness and modern life; we also remember the passing at this time of John Inman (Are you being Served?) and “Divine” – notorious US Drag Queen and film star (in John Waters’ various subversive films).

We remind ourselves that in 2008 Victoria introduced the ‘Partnership Register’ – an attempt to secure some rights for gay couples, given that gay marriage wasn’t possible. We also dwell upon the efforts of our earliest labourers who fought for the ‘8-Hour Day’ – and our annual Public Holiday, now adopted by the Moomba festival.
