BROAD’s Sonja Hammer speaks to Maria Twoomey from the NSW Government about their government initiative called Women NSW. Maria is the Project Director of Domestic and Family Violence Reforms for Women NSW.
What is The NSW Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme: It helps people who may be at risk of domestic violence to find out if their current or former partner has a history of violent criminal offences.
The Scheme is the first of its kind in Australia and one of the NSW Government’s strategies to help reduce domestic violence in NSW.
Domestic violence is usually characterised by a pattern of abusive and controlling behaviours, and perpetrators often repeat these behaviours in their relationships. The Scheme can empower people who may be at risk by helping them make informed decisions about their relationships.
It is not a register or a list, rather a way to seek information about a person’s proven violent offending history to help reduce the risk of domestic violence in the community.
It’s a groundbreaking program that aims to protect victims and prevent domestic violence by coordinating information about perpetrators, and making it available to people at risk through police stations and support services. If the DVDS is successful, organisations like Victoria’s Safe Steps may adopt similar programs.
The Scheme is being piloted in four NSW Police Force Local Area Commands:
- Oxley (Tamworth region)
- Shoalhaven (Nowra region)
- Sutherland (Menai/Engadine/Sutherland region)
- St George (Kogarah/Hurstville region).
A list of postcodes and police stations covered by the participating local area commands is available on the NSW Police website.
Many thanks to Maria Twoomey for her time for this important chat about this very important initiative.
